THINGS TO DO
Twin Cities of Grass Valley and Nevada City
The twin cities of Grass Valley and Nevada City are picturesque, recognized iconic Gold Rush Era towns. They have a laid back and artistic atmosphere with a tendency to forward-thinking development, outdoor adventure and rich farming traditions.
Both towns have many historic buildings, including old firehouses, steepled churches and old hotels that once lodged American presidents. Stroll through the downtown areas, visit a state historic park or enjoy some of the scenic trails, sparkling rivers, lakes and a wealth of arts and cultural activities.
These towns feature a number of noted restaurants, focusing on fresh, local and organic foods.
When the sun goes down, nightlife abounds. Enjoy old-fashioned saloons with live entertainment or grab a show at the Center for the Arts.
South Yuba River State Park
This is a park of steep, rugged canyons with stunning scenery and a turquoise green river tumbling between massive granite ledges.
The highlight of this park is the Bridgeport Covered Bridge, the world's longest single-span wood truss covered bridge. It recently re-opened after ten years of reconstruction and can once again be walked through.
Bridgeport Barn is a historic Dutch style barn from the early 1860's that was used for repair of wagons and shelter for visitors passing through the Virginia Turnpike.
Outdoors activities include swimming, bird watching, hiking, fishing and gold panning.
Wineries
There are several noteworthy wineries in the vicinity, which
offer a refreshing change from the more commercialized and less personal wine tasting experiences of larger wine regions. Most wineries are family-owned and operated, have small vineyards and the winemakers themselves are part of the charm, making this a newly sought-after destination for a more personalized and unique wine-tasting experience.
Visit the Placer Wine Trail website to explore your options and plan some fun day trips, or pay a visit to the Renaissance Vineyard and Winery in nearby Oregon House.
Waterfowl Viewing
Before winter takes hold in the Arctic hundreds of thousands of migrating waterfowl travel along the Pacific Flyway from their remote and solitary breeding grounds to spend the winter in California and Mexico.
This area boasts one of the largest seasonal concentrations of Tundra Swans in the Central Valley, as well as a wide variety of other species, including ducks, geese, shorebirds, herons, egrets and raptors.
Viewing locations are abundant throughout Yuba, Sutter, Colusa, Butte and Sacramento Counties.
